NITI Aayog projects that water demand will be double the available supply by 2030. Over 600 million Indians already face high to extreme water stress. And 10.8% of India’s groundwater assessment units are officially over-exploited.

For listed companies, this is more than an environmental statistic, it’s a chance to show real leadership. Under BRSR Principle 6, companies are expected to measure their water withdrawal, consumption in water-stressed areas, discharge, and recycling accurately, because accurate measurement is the first step toward actually solving the problem.

With third-party assurance now being phased in across the top 1,000 listed entities by FY26-27, companies that get ahead of this curve, by measuring honestly and acting on what they find, will be the ones best placed to manage water risk before it becomes a crisis.
